Adolescent Literacy PD
By middle school, reading stops being a subject and becomes the medium for every other subject. I equip secondary teachers — in every discipline — to teach the reading, writing, and vocabulary of their content, so students can actually access the work.
Literacy is every teacher's job
Disciplinary literacy means teaching students to read and write like a scientist, a historian, a mathematician. It isn't an add-on to content teaching — it's how students learn the content. The best part: it doesn't require adding a reading unit. It means being explicit about the expert thinking a content teacher already does.
What I deliver
- Practical, discipline-specific literacy moves teachers can use the next day
- Modeling and job-embedded coaching, not a one-and-done workshop
- Strategies for comprehension, academic vocabulary, and disciplinary writing
- Support for instructional coaches to sustain the work between sessions
- A focus on the students furthest from grade-level reading
How an engagement might unfold
Illustrative only — every engagement is right-sized to your goals and calendar.
Session 1 · Frame
Build shared understanding of disciplinary literacy and why it belongs in every classroom — then choose a first set of high-leverage moves.
Sessions 2–3 · Practice
Content-specific workshops where teachers plan and rehearse literacy moves inside their actual units, with feedback.
Ongoing · Coach
In-class coaching cycles and coach-the-coach support so the practices stick and spread.
What changes
“Every content teacher is a literacy teacher. The goal isn’t another initiative — it’s making the expert reading and writing you already do visible to students.”
Dr. Nicole Moriarty · The Teaching and Learning Collective
Frequently asked
Which subjects is this for?
All of them — science, social studies, math, CTE, and ELA. The literacy moves are tailored to each discipline.
Can this be a single keynote or full-day PD?
Yes, though the deepest impact comes from a series with coaching. I offer keynotes and single-day sessions as an entry point — see the workshops page.
What grade levels?
Primarily grades 6–12, where disciplinary reading and writing demands rise sharply and content teachers become literacy teachers.
