When two educators realized families and schools needed a better bridge
OUR STORY
We built The Teaching & Learning Collective to support every adult who shapes a child’s learning—families, teachers, and district leaders.
As a district leader and a classroom teacher, we spent many years helping children learn to read, write, and grow as thinkers. We coached educators, supported families, and built systems designed to give every learner a strong foundation.
When our own children struggled in school, everything shifted. We were suddenly sitting on the parent side of the table. We understood the teachers who were trying to help, but we also felt how confusing and overwhelming the process can be for any adult who is trying to support a child, along with the frustrating moments at home that seemed to be a daily constant and a reminder of just how hard it is to do this work with your own children.
And if we were struggling to navigate the system and keep the peace at home, even with our background in literacy and leadership, we realized something important: families, educators, and districts needed a better bridge.
Drawing on the science of reading, the science of learning, and years of instructional leadership, we created clear and developmentally sound ways to support our children. These small, steady actions helped them make progress and gave us a clearer picture of what works. This experience, along with our combined 50-plus years in literacy development, shaped the foundation of the work we do today.
The Teaching & Learning Collective now partners with families, educators, specialists, and district teams to build clarity, coherence, and confidence in how children are supported. When the adults in a child’s life feel equipped and aligned, children are more likely to grow and thrive.
